The night began to grow around them, and the couple soon found themselves lounging back in the dark grass. The stars were bright and luminous above them, scattered across the night sky like grains of corn across an ocean. And the moon was precious and divine, gazing down upon them with the approval of a good mother.


Nikiti belched quietly, covering his mouth with his hand. Adsila lay across his vast stomach, and she'd nearly fallen asleep. He didn't want to disturb her, so he suffered through his gassiness as best he could.



To distract himself, he let his finger wind around one of Adsila's stray locks. When he'd first seen her in Gregson's store, her hair had been pulled back tightly. But now it flowed freely, as it once had when they were both small children. Nikiti surmised that Adsila would likely put it away again once they broke their rest - the woman seemed to cling to elements of order and method. It complemented his dreaminess and whimsy nicely, he supposed. He'd known for a long time that he needed a good woman to keep him from wandering too deeply into himself, and he was ever so grateful that he'd recovered the woman who so successfully knew how to do so.
